Excerpt ...And Dan McGrew and many another took advantage of the fact. There were a few meagerly fed horses in the town, remnants from the discontinued Lodestar Mine, which had failed to pay a profit, after elaborate installation of equipment. They knew that at the first change of the weather their mounts would become worse than useless. In the meantime, however, there was a luxury in this form of travel that appealed. And there were hangers-on in the town, too poor for a grub-stake, who for a pittance would run on foot with the train, and afterward take back the horses to the village, when a softer snow should make them a hindrance rather than a help. 161 Nell used the voice of wifely authority "Why, the idea! Of course I shall go too!" She was all eagerness. For years she had lived with those who were informed with the spirit of the frontiers. Her husband, thus far in his battling with the Northland, had been successful. He had found claims of value. Some of them he had sold; some of 162 them he had worked. From most of them he had won a deserved profit. So, when the news of the strike on Forgotten Creek came

While reading Reagan's autobiography, I learned this was the book he read repeatedly as a young boy.I looked back at the 1920s as an innocent time, but this book shows the period was anything but.
Wife stealing. Kidnapping. Roofies. Murder. It's all there.
If books carried ratings, as movies do, not sure a 12-year-old Dutch would have been allowed to read it.
A very entertaining Western!
Spoiler alert: Don't read the book title.

Cool read
Love this story
Having known the poem for many years, I really enjoyed this story built around Service's unique poem. Author Dana took some liberties with the original narrative which added greatly to the enjoyment.
I have both of the classic twins memorized and have recited them many times , cant decide which one is better both leave an imprint on your mine about the klondike goldrush forever.
Everything came as described, thank you.
Robert W Service's classic poem of the Canadian Arctic emboldened with amazing art. A children's classic as long as you don't mind reading to them about bars, shoot outs and thieving whores.
This pom and "The cremation of Sam McGee" have been my greatest favorites since i was old enough to understand spoken words, and to accurately repeat words spoken to me. In my fifth and sixth grade classes, I sometimes entertained classmates by narrating these two poems. And this was before I found out that "RED-BLOODED MALES DO NOT LEARN OR RECITE POETRY!" Not true, by the bye!!! This has been a perennial favorite of my first and second grade students when I was an Elementary school teacher. It was also favored by my recruits when I was a U.S. Army Drill Sergeant! And NOT because I was their Drill Sergeant.)
Robert Service's poetry truly reflects the atmosphere of the Yukon.
