"I loved this book," wrote Lonely Planet. "I must have laughed out loud at least once in every chapter... The advice in the book is terrific."
Living abroad is an opportunity to reinvent yourself that rarely exists outside the witness protection program. You get to hit the reset button on your life. Karen McCann's tale of moving from Cleveland, Ohio, to Seville, Spain, is "a delightfully well-written true-life adventure story . . . McCann's writing is inviting, immediately charming, and constantly entertaining," says Chris Brady, NY Times bestselling author of A Month of Italy.
Dancing in the Fountain takes its title from one blazing hot night when the author and her husband found themselves sitting on the edge of a big stone fountain. Dabbling their feet in the cool water, pretty soon they were wading, then waltzing in the fountain. An old man passing by growled, "Hey you two, is that any way to behave? You wouldn't do that back where you come from." And that's the whole point. Living overseas, you get to try things you'd never do back home.
Rita Golden Gelman, author of Tales of a Female Nomad, says, "What fun. . . McCann's wacky sense of humor will have you smiling on every page. Just reading this will give you the confidence of an experienced traveler."
“Creating a new life in an old European city has never been so delightful, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny,” says Victoria Twead, NY Times bestselling author of Two Old Fools on a Camel.

Always have fond memories over our several weeks in Spain 15 years ago so this book peaked my interest as spending more time there is something on our mind. Karen gave enough info over the pros & cons & the Flexibility Required to make a longer commitment that in her case became a somewhat permanent situation living there most of the year! She does mention her preference for old city living as opposed to Spanish countryside! Found another book of hers about visiting nearby Euro countries by train that is next on my list after finishing my "Feta" travel books on the other side of Europe.Product details

Dancing In The Fountain How to Enjoy Living Abroad eBook Karen McCann Reviews
I would recommend to anyone planning to live abroad and those who would love to but can't , for their personal reasons. Well written and humorous as well as informative...never knew sooooo many festivals, etc. good technical info. and good description of Spanish people, etc. good info. about culture.
Very interesting story of a couple's living in a Spanish city over several years. Reading of their shopping lists, etc. was a bit tedious, though. Get their book on travels through Eastern Europe; also good. Looking on Google Earth will show some of the sights they saw in Spain. The wooden skyscraper is very unusual.
Another amazing, entertaining and informative book. I feel like I'm sitting on that IKEA furniture and hearing these wonderful tales from my dear forever friends. I've read this and train nomads, love them both. I live in the Sunset near Ocean beach so know what my "summer" will be like, but the "Indian summer" in September and October are awesome ;-)
Spain is one country we didn't get to visit before my traveling days came to an end. But this book is so well and enjoyably written that it feels as though we not only visited there, but were able to stay as the McCanns did. I wish that some photos were included, especially of the fiesta days, but that is not a criticism, just a hope in case the McCanns do some more traveling.
Where do I start? Well written? Actually extremely well written! Entertaining? Actually extremely entertaining!
This is a wonderful Memoir covering a period in the author's life when she and her husband decide to 'up sticks' and move from rural Ohio to Seville in Southern Spain. We are taken on that journey with them and what a joy it is to be invited to share their life through this book. A joyful book full of interesting adventures and experiences written by an intelligent and mesmerising woman.
She captivates the reader with her descriptions of the Spanish people (and ex-pats) she encounters and of Seville itself.
Thank you for writing this book, you gave me such pleasure.
Anyone who is contemplating moving to a foreign country should have this book at hand before, during, and after the move. It is full of good practical advice and plenty of humour as the author describes their settling in Seville, Spain. Their 'other' home in California is also described and the difficulties of adapting to two very different cultures are fascinating, California and Spain are really 'worlds apart'
Dancing in the Fountain is an entertaining, informative and interesting story of a couple of ex-pats who made the jump from vacationing visitors to residential ex-pats in the heart of old Spain.
Karen McCann shares the adventure as she and her husband first tackle language lessons, then immerse themselves in the wonderful cafe society of Seville. The reader tags along as the couple move through different stages of the journey from their decision to sell their home and belongings, to finding the perfect flat in Spain. It isn't long until they're filling their days with food, friendship, music, art, and history in this walkable city.
McCann weaves a very enjoyable tale, and the couple are very approachable, likeable people. I feel readers will enjoy Dancing in the Fountain whether they're planning their next visit Spain or simply day dreaming about a Spanish adventure. I know I did, and I was sorry to see the book come to an end.
